Originating in Thailand, this plant ranges from sea level to 1,600 feet in elevation and was introduced to Hawaii where it was given the name 'Alii', which translates to "Chief". It shares a closer relation to Ficus benjamina compared to the other 40 common Ficus species grown as house plants. Nonetheless, it grows approximately 25% slower and showcases foliage that is distinctly unlike Ficus benjamina. The leaves, which are somewhat thick, can range from 3 to 10 inches in length with a long and narrow shape. Occasionally, fresh growth has a bronze hue before turning into a lush green color as it matures. This plant is hardier and simpler to cultivate compared to the usual Ficus benjamina. It doesn't have the fussiness and inclination to drop leaves. It is able to withstand lower light levels and irregular watering more successfully compared to the benjaminas.
