Monstera Deliciosa — the famous swiss-cheese plant — is the plant every Dubai apartment wants on the Instagram shelf, and one of the fastest to decline when care goes wrong. The good news: Monstera is not a fussy plant. It is a climbing tropical from Central America that adapts well to UAE indoor conditions if you understand what it actually needs. The bad news: it will happily tell you when it is unhappy, and most of what it tells you — yellowing leaves, droopy stems, no fenestration — gets misread. This guide covers both the deluxe (large, mature, floor-standing) and medium (tabletop to knee-height) Monstera, since their care is close but not identical. Our nursery team sells more Monsteras than any other single houseplant, so these notes come from what actually happens in Dubai homes.

Light: Bright indirect, but more than you think

Monstera is often sold as a "low-light plant". It is not. In dim corners, medium Monsteras stop producing fenestrated (holey) leaves and grow long, stretched stems with small plain leaves. For real leaf shape and steady growth, give Monstera bright indirect light — within 1.5 metres of an east or north-facing window is ideal. Direct midday sun through UAE glass will scorch leaves in under an hour, so filter south and west windows with sheers. Deluxe Monsteras handle a little more shade because of their established root system, but a medium on a coffee table three metres from the nearest window will stall.

Watering: The top inch rule, adjusted for UAE

Monsteras want a "water deeply, dry partly" cycle. Water when the top 3-4 cm of soil is dry to the touch — no earlier. In UAE summer with AC running, that usually works out to every 7-10 days for a medium in a 25 cm pot, and every 10-14 days for a deluxe in a 40 cm+ pot. In cooler months (October through February), stretch those intervals by 30-50%. Always water until runoff comes through the drainage holes, empty the saucer, and never water on a strict calendar — the pot's weight and the top-soil feel are better guides than a day of the week. Overwatering is the number-one killer of Dubai Monsteras.

Repotting: Every 2 years, step up one size

Monsteras like being slightly pot-bound, but roots circling the pot surface and water running straight through mean it is time. Repot every two years in autumn (late September to early November is the best UAE window) and step up one pot size — around 5 cm wider. Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix: two parts quality potting soil, one part perlite or pumice, one part orchid bark. Standard dense potting soil holds too much water in UAE's humid summer indoor air and will rot roots fast.

Supporting the climb

Monstera is a climber. In the wild, it grows up tree trunks using aerial roots. Indoors, a moss pole or coir pole helps a deluxe Monstera grow larger, more fenestrated leaves — it signals to the plant that it is "climbing". Tie stems loosely to the pole every 20-30 cm with soft plant ties. Mist the pole occasionally in summer to encourage the aerial roots to attach. Medium Monsteras do not need a pole yet, but will grow into one within 12-18 months.

Common issues and quick fixes

Yellow leaves. Nine times out of ten, this is overwatering. Check the soil 5 cm down — if it is wet, skip the next watering and let it dry deeper. Pull the plant out of the pot to inspect roots if yellowing spreads; mushy brown roots need trimming. Brown crispy edges. Low humidity from constant AC. Group plants together, run a small humidifier, or move the pot to a bathroom with a window. No holes in new leaves. Low light. Move it closer to a window and wait — new leaves will come in fenestrated within a few growth cycles. Aerial roots everywhere. Normal and healthy. Tuck them into the pot or train them onto the moss pole — do not cut them unless they are damaged.

FAQ

Is Monstera safe for pets?

No. Monstera Deliciosa is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed, per the ASPCA. It contains insoluble calcium oxalates that cause mouth irritation, drooling, and vomiting. Keep out of reach of pets, or pick a pet-safe alternative from our pet-safe collection.

Why has my Monstera stopped growing?

Either light is too low, the pot is too small, or it is winter. Monstera growth slows dramatically from November to February in UAE and picks up again in spring.

How often should I fertilise?

Once a month, March through October, with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Skip feeding in peak summer (July-August) and winter dormancy.

Can I propagate from a cutting?

Yes. Cut below a node with at least one aerial root, root it in water for 3-4 weeks, then pot in aroid mix. It is one of the easiest houseplants to propagate.
