Growing Araucaria heterophylla (Norfolk Island pine) as a bonsai can be a rewarding challenge! Although it's not the most common species for bonsai, its distinctive, symmetrical structure makes it an intriguing choice. Here’s a guide to help you care for your Norfolk Island pine bonsai:

1. Light:
Norfolk Island pines prefer bright, indirect light. Ideally, place your bonsai near a window where it gets plenty of light, but avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
If you're growing it indoors, a south or east-facing window would be best. During winter months, you may need supplemental grow lights to ensure it gets enough light.
2. Watering:
Keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged. These trees do not like to dry out completely, so water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
Be sure your bonsai pot has good drainage to prevent root rot. Norfolk pines don’t tolerate soggy conditions.
3. Humidity:
These trees thrive in higher humidity levels, so if you live in a dry climate or your indoor air is dry (especially in winter), consider increasing the humidity around your bonsai. You can use a humidity tray with pebbles and water or use a humidifier.
Regular misting can help as well, especially in dry indoor conditions.
4. Temperature:
Norfolk Island pines prefer moderate temperatures between 18°C to 24°C (65°F to 75°F). Avoid placing them in drafty areas or near heating vents, as they don’t like sudden temperature fluctuations.
They are not frost-tolerant, so be sure to keep them indoors if you're in a cold climate.
5. Pruning and Shaping:
Araucaria heterophylla has a natural pyramidal shape that works well for bonsai styling. You’ll want to focus on maintaining that shape as you prune.
Light pruning can be done to shape the tree and remove any unwanted growth. Focus on cutting back the longer branches and ensuring that the tree stays symmetrical. Be careful not to remove too much foliage at once, as this can weaken the tree.
You can pinch back the new growth to encourage denser branching, but don’t prune too aggressively, as these trees grow slowly and might not recover quickly.
6. Repotting:
Repot your Norfolk pine bonsai every two to three years, or when the roots outgrow the pot. Be sure to prune the roots carefully during repotting to keep the tree compact.
Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix that retains some moisture but also dries out well to avoid root rot.
7. Fertilizing:
Fertilize during the growing season (spring through summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer. You can feed it once a month or follow the instructions on your specific fertilizer.
During the fall and winter, when the tree is not actively growing, reduce fertilizing or stop altogether.
8. Wiring:
Norfolk Island pines have brittle branches, so you should be cautious when wiring them for shaping. Use soft wire and only apply it for short periods to avoid damage to the tree.
If you’re going for a more elaborate design, you’ll need to carefully shape the branches over time to maintain the natural pyramidal shape.
9. Pests and Problems:
Norfolk Island pines are generally resistant to most pests, but they can occasionally attract spider mites, scale, or aphids. Regularly check for pests and treat with an appropriate insecticidal soap if needed.
If the tree’s leaves turn brown or start to drop, it might be a sign of overwatering, underwatering, or low humidity.
