Cycad: Although sago palms (Cycas revoluta) are a type of plant that predates even dinosaurs, they are not truly palms.
Native to China and Japan, the Sago Palm is an evergreen perennial that resembles a palm. On top of a rough, upright trunk, it forms an extremely attractive rosette of shiny, arching, pinnate leaves that can reach lengths of 2 to 5 feet (60 to 150 cm). Every leaf is divided into numerous deep green, narrow, leathery, spiky-tipped leaflets with rounded edges.
Sago palms have distinct male and female plants because they are dioecious. Male plants reach maturity and produce ovoid, upright, golden-brown inflorescences. Reddish fruits are produced in tight clusters by female plants. For plants to produce seeds, male and female pollination is necessary.
