Indoor Calathea Zebrina (Zebra Plant), Type 1A, 1.5LP, 50-60CM

Calathea Zebrina, commonly known as the Zebra Plant, is an eye-catching tropical plant known for its velvety, striped foliage. The leaves are light green with dark green zebra-like stripes, and the undersides are purple, making it a beautiful addition to any indoor garden. However, like other calatheas, it requires specific care to maintain its vibrant look.

Light Requirements
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Too much direct sunlight can cause the leaves to scorch and lose their vibrant patterns.
It can tolerate low to medium light, but less light may slow growth and fade leaf colors.
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater if possible, as Calathea Zebrina is sensitive to chemicals in tap water (like fluoride and chlorine), which can cause browning leaf tips.
Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent water from sitting at the roots and causing rot.
Humidity and Temperature
High humidity is essential for Calathea Zebrina. Aim for humidity levels above 50%. If the air is too dry, the leaf edges may brown. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, misting the plant, or placing it on a humidity tray.
Keep the plant in a temperature range of 65-80°F (18-27°C). Avoid exposure to drafts, cold air, or sudden temperature changes, as it can stress the plant and cause leaf curling or wilting.
Soil
Use a well-draining potting mix. A blend of potting soil, peat moss, and perlite works well to retain moisture without becoming soggy.
Good drainage is key to preventing root rot.
Fertilizing
Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced, water-soluble fertilizer.
Avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to a buildup of salts in the soil and damage the plant.
Pruning
Regularly remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to promote healthy growth and keep the plant looking neat.
Pruning for shape is not necessary, but trimming leggy or dead stems can help maintain a fuller appearance.
Repotting
Repot every 1-2 years in the spring to refresh the soil and give the plant more space. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one.
When repotting, make sure to use fresh, well-draining soil.
Pests and Problems
Pests: Calathea Zebrina can sometimes be affected by spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids. Regularly inspect the plant and use insecticidal soap or neem oil if pests are present.
Common Issues:
Browning leaf edges: Caused by dry air, tap water chemicals, or underwatering.
Curling leaves: This can be a sign of underwatering, low humidity, or exposure to cold drafts.
Yellowing leaves: Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage.
