Succulent Sansevieria Cylindrica (Cylindrical Snake)  Type H3, 10LP, 60-70CM

Sansevieria cylindrica, also known as cylindrical snake plant or African spear plant, is a striking and unique succulent native to Angola. This hardy, low-maintenance plant is known for its upright, cylindrical leaves, which set it apart from other species in the Sansevieria genus. It’s a popular choice for indoor spaces due to its sculptural appearance and its ability to thrive in a wide range of conditions.

Key Features:
Growth Habit: Sansevieria cylindrica grows as a clumping plant, with cylindrical, spear-like leaves that can reach up to 1-2 meters (3-6 feet) in height. The leaves are smooth, dark green with faint gray-green banding, and grow directly from the soil in an upright, fan-shaped arrangement.
Leaves: The leaves are thick, cylindrical, and pointed, resembling spears or elongated spikes. They can grow to impressive lengths, making the plant visually striking and giving it a modern, minimalist look.
Flowers: Although rare, Sansevieria cylindrica can produce small, tubular, white to greenish-white flowers on a long flower stalk. The flowers are mildly fragrant but are uncommon, especially in indoor environments.
Growth Rate: This species is slow-growing, especially when grown indoors. It can take years for the plant to reach its maximum height, making it a low-maintenance addition to homes or offices.
Growing Conditions:
Light: Sansevieria cylindrica can tolerate a wide range of light conditions, from bright, indirect light to low light. While it grows best in bright, indirect light, it can adapt to shaded areas, making it an excellent plant for indoor spaces with less natural light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
Soil: This plant prefers well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent potting mix is ideal to ensure that water does not accumulate around the roots, which can lead to rot. If planting in regular potting soil, amend it with sand or perlite to improve drainage.
Watering: Like other succulents, Sansevieria cylindrica is drought-tolerant and requires infrequent watering. Water the plant deeply, but allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is one of the few ways to harm this plant, as it is prone to root rot. During the winter months, reduce watering significantly.
Temperature: Sansevieria cylindrica thrives in typical household temperatures between 18-27°C (65-80°F). It can tolerate temperatures down to 10°C (50°F) but should be protected from frost. It is not cold-hardy, so outdoor plants in cooler climates need to be brought inside during the winter.
Humidity: This plant does well in low to moderate humidity levels, making it perfect for indoor environments. It can tolerate dry air and does not require additional humidity.
Care and Maintenance:
Pruning: Sansevieria cylindrica requires minimal pruning. Remove any dead or damaged leaves by cutting them at the base to maintain the plant's appearance. The plant’s slow growth means that pruning will not be needed frequently.
Repotting: Repot the plant every 2-3 years or when it becomes root-bound. This plant prefers to be slightly root-bound, so it does not need frequent repotting. When repotting, choose a container with good drainage and use well-draining soil.
Fertilizing: Feed the plant with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) every 4-6 weeks. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to leggy growth and damage the plant.
Common Problems:
Overwatering: The most common issue with Sansevieria cylindrica is overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Ensure the soil dries out between waterings and that the pot has good drainage.
Pests: While relatively pest-resistant, Sansevieria cylindrica can occasionally be affected by mealybugs or spider mites. Regularly inspect the plant for pests and treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Leaf Drooping: If the leaves start to droop or become soft, this may be a sign of overwatering or insufficient light. Adjust watering habits and move the plant to a brighter location if needed.
