Bucida buceras, commonly known as the Black Olive or Shady Lady, is an evergreen tree native to tropical Asia. Despite its name, the fruits are not edible. This tree is popular in landscaping for its dense canopy, making it an excellent choice for shade, street, or specimen planting.
Key Features
Height & Spread: Mature trees reach 8–15 meters in height and 8–10 meters in spread. Young trees often have a pyramidal shape, which flattens and spreads with age.
Leaves: Dark bluish-green, leathery, and clustered at branch tips. Some branches may have spines.
Flowers & Fruit: Small, greenish-yellow flowers; produces small, black seed capsules resembling olives. These are not edible and can stain surfaces due to tannic acid.
Growth Rate: Slow to medium.
