Aeschynanthus Caroline (Lipstick plant) | 40 - 60cm
Aeschynanthus 'Caroline', commonly known as the Lipstick Plant, is a popular houseplant valued for its cascading vines and vibrant red, tube-shaped flowers that resemble a tube of lipstick. Native to tropical rainforests, it thrives in warm, humid environments. Here’s how to care for it:
Light Requirements
Bright, indirect light is ideal. It can tolerate some direct morning sun but should be protected from harsh afternoon rays.
In lower light, it may not flower as profusely and may grow leggy, so try to provide a well-lit space, such as near a bright window.
Watering
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. The plant prefers to be evenly moist, but not soggy.
Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. It’s better to let the soil dry slightly between waterings.
Reduce watering in the winter months when the plant's growth slows down.
Humidity and Temperature
Being a tropical plant, it thrives in high humidity. If the air is dry, especially indoors during winter, consider increasing humidity using a humidity tray or misting the plant.
Temperature: It prefers temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C) and should be protected from cold drafts or temperatures below 60°F (15°C).
Soil
Use a well-draining potting mix. A mix designed for epiphytic plants (similar to what orchids and bromeliads use) or a standard potting mix combined with perlite or orchid bark works well.
Good drainage is essential to prevent water from sitting at the roots.
Fertilizing
Fertilize every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer.
Stop or reduce fertilizing during fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing.
Pruning
Prune regularly to maintain a bushy, compact form and encourage new growth.
Cut back any leggy or overly long vines to keep the plant looking neat and healthy.
Repotting
Repot the plant every 2-3 years or when it becomes root-bound. Choose a slightly larger pot with proper drainage.
Repot in the spring for the best results.
