Indoor Senecio Rowleyanus (String of Pearls) Green Type 1F, 1LP, 30-40CM Senecio Rowleyanus, commonly known as String of Pearls, is a unique and attractive trailing succulent. Its small, bead-like leaves resemble pearls or peas, making it a favorite for hanging baskets or trailing over the edges of pots. Native to South Africa, this plant is relatively easy to care for as long as it gets the right light and water conditions. Here's a guide on how to care for it: Light RequirementsBright, indirect light is best for String of Pearls. Place it near a sunny window where it can receive plenty of indirect sunlight. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning or late afternoon, but avoid harsh, midday sun as it can burn the delicate leaves. In low light conditions, the plant may grow leggy and lose its compact appearance.WateringAs a succulent, String of Pearls prefers to be on the drier side. Water the plant when the soil is completely dry.During the growing season (spring and summer), water once the top few inches of soil have dried out. Ensure the soil drains well and never let the plant sit in water, as this can cause root rot.In the fall and winter, reduce watering significantly, as the plant goes dormant and requires less moisture.Water the plant directly at the soil level, avoiding the leaves, to prevent rot.Humidity and TemperatureString of Pearls thrives in average household humidity and does not need extra humidity. It prefers warm temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C) but can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures. Avoid temperatures below 50°F (10°C).Protect it from cold drafts or sudden temperature changes, especially if placed near windows or doors.SoilUse a well-draining succulent or cactus potting mix. You can also create your own mix by combining standard potting soil with perlite or sand for better drainage.Ensure the pot has drainage holes to allow excess water to escape and prevent waterlogged soil.FertilizingFertilize String of Pearls during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced fertilizer (such as 10-10-10).Feed the plant every 4-6 weeks, but avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant is dormant.PruningRegular pruning can help maintain a compact and healthy appearance. Trim back long, leggy stems if the plant becomes overgrown or to encourage fuller growth.Remove any yellowing or shriveled pearls to keep the plant looking tidy.RepottingRepot the plant every 2-3 years, or when it becomes root-bound. Spring is the best time for repotting.Choose a shallow pot with good drainage, as the shallow roots of String of Pearls don’t need a deep pot.Pests and ProblemsPests: String of Pearls can be prone to pests such as mealybugs and aphids. Check the plant regularly, especially where the leaves meet the stems. If you notice pests, treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.Common Issues:Shriveled leaves: This is a sign of underwatering. Increase watering slightly, but be careful not to overwater.Yellowing or mushy leaves: This is often due to overwatering or poor drainage, leading to root rot. Ensure the soil dries out completely between waterings.PropagationString of Pearls is easy to propagate via stem cuttings:Cut a healthy stem (around 3-4 inches long) with several pearls.Remove the pearls from the bottom inch of the cutting.Lay the stem cuttings on top of the soil (you can bury the stripped portion slightly) and press them gently into the surface.Mist the cuttings lightly every few days until roots form (usually within 2-4 weeks).Once the cuttings are established, care for them as you would a mature plant.ToxicityString of Pearls is considered toxic to pets and humans if ingested. It can cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or irritation, so it’s best to keep it out of reach of children and pets. With proper care, Senecio Rowleyanus will reward you with cascading strings of bead-like leaves that add a stunning visual element to any indoor or outdoor space. This plant's unique appearance and easy-care nature make it a favorite among succulent enthusiasts.   *Disclaimer: The graphic is just meant to be used as a guide and illustration purposes.
