Shrub Jasminum Sambac, Type C, 10LP
Jasminum sambac, commonly known as Arabian Jasmine, is a fragrant and beautiful flowering plant native to Southeast Asia. It is prized for its highly aromatic, white, star-shaped flowers that are often used in making perfumes, teas, and garlands. Jasminum sambac can be grown as a shrub or vine, making it versatile for both indoor and outdoor gardening.
Here’s how to care for Jasminum sambac:
Light Requirements
Full sunlight is ideal for healthy growth and abundant flowering. Jasminum sambac thrives in at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day.
Indoors, place the plant near a south-facing window where it can receive plenty of light. If it's not flowering, it may need more light.
Watering
Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 1 inch of soil feels dry to the touch.
During the growing season (spring and summer), water regularly. In the winter, reduce watering as the plant’s growth slows down.
Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, as Arabian Jasmine doesn't like to sit in water.
Humidity and Temperature
Jasminum sambac prefers moderate to high humidity, especially in warm weather. Misting the plant regularly or placing it on a humidity tray can help increase moisture levels indoors.
Ideal temperatures are between 65-80°F (18-27°C). It prefers warm conditions and should be protected from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
If grown outdoors, bring the plant indoors before the first frost as it is not frost-tolerant.
Soil
Use a well-draining, loamy potting mix that retains moisture without becoming soggy. A mix containing peat moss and perlite is ideal.
Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from pooling at the bottom.
Fertilizing
Feed Jasminum sambac with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
Fertilizers high in potassium can help promote flowering. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excess leaf growth at the expense of flowers.
Pruning
Prune after flowering to shape the plant and encourage bushier growth. Trimming back leggy stems will also stimulate new flower buds.
Pinching off spent flowers will help redirect energy into producing more blooms.
Flowering
Jasminum sambac typically blooms during the summer months, producing clusters of fragrant, white flowers. In ideal conditions, it may bloom multiple times throughout the year.
To encourage continuous blooming, ensure the plant receives ample sunlight, proper watering, and regular feeding.
Repotting
Repot the plant every 2-3 years or when it outgrows its container. Spring is the best time to repot Jasminum sambac.
Use fresh potting soil and a container that’s slightly larger than the current one.
Pests and Problems
Pests: Jasminum sambac can be prone to aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Regularly inspect the plant, and treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Common Issues:
Yellowing leaves: This can be caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Ensure the soil dries out between waterings and that the pot drains well.
Lack of blooms: Insufficient light or nutrients may result in fewer flowers. Move the plant to a sunnier spot and consider feeding it a potassium-rich fertilizer.
