Crassula ovata, commonly known as the Jade Plant or Money Plant, is a popular succulent species native to South Africa. It is widely appreciated for its thick, fleshy, oval-shaped leaves and its ability to thrive in indoor environments with minimal care. Jade Plants are often associated with luck, prosperity, and good fortune, making them a popular choice for homes and offices.

Characteristics:
Foliage: The Jade Plant features thick, glossy, oval-shaped leaves that are typically deep green, although some varieties may have a reddish tint on the edges when exposed to bright sunlight. The leaves store water, allowing the plant to withstand periods of drought. Over time, the plant develops a thick, woody stem that gives it the appearance of a miniature tree.
Size: Crassula ovata can grow to a height of 60-120 cm (2-4 feet) indoors, but it can grow even larger outdoors in warm climates. The plant tends to grow slowly, but with proper care, it can live for many years and grow into an impressive, shrub-like specimen.
Flowers: Although Jade Plants rarely bloom indoors, they can produce small, star-shaped white or pink flowers in clusters during the winter if they receive sufficient light. Flowering is more common in mature plants.
Growing Conditions:
Light: Jade Plants prefer bright, indirect light. They thrive in full sun, especially when grown outdoors, but indoors they should be placed near a sunny window where they can receive several hours of indirect sunlight. Insufficient light may cause the plant to become leggy and lose its vibrant color.
Watering: Like most succulents, Crassula ovata is drought-tolerant and prefers to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems, as it can lead to root rot. In winter, the plant’s water needs decrease, so reduce watering during colder months.
Soil: Use well-draining soil, such as a succulent or cactus mix. You can also mix regular potting soil with sand or perlite to improve drainage. Jade Plants do not tolerate soggy soil, so it's important to avoid water retention.
Temperature: Jade Plants prefer temperatures between 18-24°C (65-75°F). They are not frost-tolerant, so they should be protected from temperatures below 10°C (50°F). In warmer climates, they can be grown outdoors year-round, but in colder regions, they should be brought indoors during the winter.
Humidity: Crassula ovata thrives in low to moderate humidity. It can tolerate dry indoor air, making it an excellent choice for homes and offices.
Care and Maintenance:
Fertilizing: Feed Jade Plants with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength during the growing season (spring and summer). Fertilize once a month, but avoid feeding in the fall and winter when the plant is dormant.
Pruning: Prune the plant to maintain its shape and encourage branching. Trim leggy growth or remove damaged leaves to keep the plant compact and healthy. Pruning also encourages new growth and can help shape the plant into a bushier form.
Repotting: Jade Plants prefer to be slightly root-bound, so they only need to be repotted every 2-3 years or when they outgrow their current pot. Choose a pot with good drainage, and use fresh, well-draining soil when repotting.
Propagation:
Leaf or Stem Cuttings: Jade Plants are easily propagated from leaf or stem cuttings. To propagate, cut a healthy leaf or stem and allow the cut end to dry for a day or two to prevent rot. Afterward, place the cutting in well-draining soil. Roots will develop within a few weeks, and new growth will appear.
Division: If the plant has developed several stems, it can be divided into smaller sections. Gently separate the roots and stems, then plant the divisions in separate containers.
Common Issues:
Overwatering: The most common issue with Jade Plants is overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Ensure the soil is completely dry between waterings, and avoid letting the plant sit in standing water.
Pests: Jade Plants can occasionally be affected by mealybugs or scale insects. Inspect the plant regularly for signs of pests and treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Leaf Drop: If the plant is overwatered or exposed to cold drafts, it may drop its leaves. Adjust watering habits or move the plant to a warmer, more stable environment if leaf drop occurs.
