Broad-leaved evergreen Radermachera sinica, also known as China doll, serpent tree, or emerald tree, is indigenous to subtropical mountain regions of southern China and Taiwan. This tree can reach a height of 90 feet in its natural habitat under ideal growing conditions. It has bipinnate compound leaves that can reach 30 inches in length, with glossy dark green leaflets that can reach 2 inches in length. The tree also has fragrant, trumpet-shaped, crinkly-petaled, white or yellow flowers that can reach 3 inches in length. The flowers bloom in panicles at the leaf axils or branch ends during the spring and summer. Non-showy fruits in thin capsules follow flowers. When grown in areas without frost, this tree typically reaches a considerably smaller height of 25 to 30 feet. China dolls have become extremely popular foliage in more temperate climates.
