Ficus Panda (also known as Ficus Retusa Panda) is a popular variety of Ficus microcarpa known for its thick, glossy green leaves and bonsai-friendly nature. It’s commonly used in indoor gardens and as a houseplant, often grown in bonsai form due to its compact growth and easy maintenance.

Key Features:
Appearance:
The Ficus Panda has dense, leathery, oval-shaped leaves that are deep green and glossy.
It typically has a thick trunk and aerial roots, making it ideal for bonsai styling. When well-maintained, the plant develops a gnarled, sculptural appearance that adds to its ornamental value.
Its growth habit is bushy and compact, making it suitable for indoor spaces.
Size:
In its natural habitat, Ficus Panda can grow into a small tree, but when cultivated as a houseplant or bonsai, it remains compact, often between 30 cm to 1 meter (1-3 feet) in height.
Growing Conditions:
Light:
Ficus Panda prefers bright, indirect sunlight but can tolerate lower light levels. However, for optimal growth and a healthy appearance, place it near a well-lit area.
Avoid direct sunlight as it can cause leaf scorching.
Soil:
It thrives in well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. A good-quality potting mix or a bonsai-specific soil blend works well for this plant.
Watering:
Water regularly, but allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Ficus Panda prefers moderate moisture but is sensitive to overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
Reduce watering during the winter months when the plant’s growth slows down.
Humidity and Temperature:
Ficus Panda enjoys warm temperatures ranging from 18-25°C (65-77°F) and moderate humidity.
It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Care and Maintenance:
Pruning:
Regular pruning is recommended to maintain its compact shape and encourage new growth. Trim back overgrown branches or leggy growth to shape the plant as desired.
Prune aerial roots if they become too dense or if you're shaping the plant as a bonsai.
Repotting:
Repot the plant every 2-3 years or when it becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is slightly larger and has drainage holes to prevent water accumulation.
Fertilizing:
During the growing season (spring and summer), feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks. Reduce feeding in fall and winter.
Common Issues:
Leaf Drop: Ficus Panda can drop leaves due to changes in environment, such as moving to a new location, drafts, or inconsistent watering. Keep conditions stable to avoid stress.
Pests: Occasionally, the plant may be affected by common houseplant pests like spider mites, mealybugs, or scale. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
