Within the Araceae family, the American evergreen is a tropical perennial shrub or vine that can grow up to six feet in height. Its low-maintenance, green or variegated, long-petiole leaves and bushy, occasionally cascading stems make it desirable in interior settings.  Rarely does it bloom indoors. 

Warm, humid conditions are ideal for this kind of place.  Steer clear of areas that receive direct sunlight, as it tends to burn or bleach the foliage. Although it's usually a perennial, you can grow it as an annual in containers or in other bright, shaded areas. When plants are young, they will have a shrubby habit; however, as they get older, they will take on a vine-like habit.
