The Yucca Elephantipes is the most readily found indoor plant in New Zealand. Also called the Spineless Yucca, Spanish Dagger, Adam’s Needle, Spanish Bayonet and Soapweed, Yuccas are resilient perennial plants. They possess sturdy stems made of wood that produce bunches of lengthy, spear-shaped leaves in dark green color at the top. In late spring and summer, yuccas have the potential to create striking groups of white, bell-shaped flowers. These flowers are so impressive that the first settlers of the south-western United States named them “Lamparas de Dios” or “Lanterns of God”. Pollination and adequate yucca maintenance are essential for indoor plant flowers to form. Yucca care is versatile, low-maintenance, and beneficial for air purification. Yucca plants thrive in full sunlight, making them ideal for west-facing windows. They thrive in bright, indirect sunlight as well. Yucca will produce fewer flowers and grow thinner when cultivated in low light conditions. Yuccas thrive in soil that is not necessarily top quality, but must be able to drain well. Nevertheless, it must still have sufficient weight for supporting the plant in an upright position. The soil for a Yucca plant needs to have good water retention. Experiment with a mix of 3 parts sand to 1 part peat in your container. Yucca is very prone to damage from excess water. Ensure the plant is well-drained and allowed to dry out between waterings when watering during the spring and summer seasons. Water intermittently during the winter season. Always avoid allowing a yucca plant to remain in a water-filled tray. Feed using liquid or controlled-release fertilizer as directed on the product label during the growing season.
